Turning in Place II, the second annual film festival featuring 12 up and-coming female-identifying choreographers and female-led dance companies, presenting original filmed works, will premiere at an in-person screening event at Queens Theatre on International Women's Day in advance of its online run.

The premiere event will take place at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, followed by a talkback session with the choreographers. This event is FREE, but reservations are required.

The Turning in Place Dance Film Showcase returns to Queens Theatre! This showcase, featuring the work of female choreographers, is now in its second year and is adding a live premiere. Come and see the work of a dozen young artists and companies with a Q&A with the choreographers to follow. Artists and works include: ? Hannah Straney, Dust ? Demi Remick, Trolley Song ? Anneke Belman, Hurts Me To My Heart ? Rebecca Allen, Animus Movement Tradecraft ? Song Ravinian, In Memory of... ? Tatiana Nuñez, supercodex 05 ? Joan Antoaldina, Crying On the Island They Own ? Nicole Caruana, Goshen ? Garet Wierdsma, and sometimes i wish ? Hannah Garner, 2nd Best Dance Company, Excerpt from Pony ? Mackenzie King, Moonwater Dance Project, Full Build ? Jessica Smith and Chelsea Ainsworth, Dual Rivet Dance, Capsule The program will also be available for viewing from March 9-April 8 on the Queens Theatre YouTube page.

The works in this festival are all original compositions, staged and filmed for the camera. These young choreographers explore issues of race, gender, and just the sheer joy and beauty of movement and expressiveness of the human form.

This festival was originally conceived to give choreographers and dancers an outlet for their creativity during the pandemic. While all of the arts were affected by COVID-19, dancers were particularly hard hit. Dance careers are shorter than most, and to lose over a year of their primes was devastating.

Since last year’s festival, dance has returned to the Queens Theatre stage and we have weathered multiple variant surges. This showcase continues as a testament to the vibrancy and creativity of the dance community.
